The roots of NAPPYWOOD was birth out of an Award winning documentary , My Nappy ROOTS: A Journey through Black Hairitage. The feature film was inspired after Regi & Jay mentored Regi's daughter Brighton on My Nappy ROOTS, award winning 5 min film for NAACP-ACTSO competition.
After My Nappy ROOTS public controversy with Chris Rock's 'Good Hair', MNR began to play to sold out audiences internationally. The global dialogue sparked the birth of International Black Hairitage (IBH) Film Festival 2011 in London . Sold out Events were held in 5 countries before returning to Los Angeles to create Nappywood as the USA answer to IBH in 2013. Nappywood represents the global dialogue creating economic community empowerment. The same year the opportunity was presented to create a Los Angeles based Natural Hair Show to Regina. She brought in LA based partners to create the 'Los Angeles Natural Hair Expo'. Nappywood was held in Leimert Park with non profit partners We Can Foundation and Black Women for Wellness. and the Hair Expo was on Sunday at a small hotel near LAX. Five years later Nappywood is still focused on community, economic Empowerment workshops and family activities on Saturday and the LA Natural Hair Expo is Everything Natural Hair & Lifestyle with hair Showcases & Competition on Sunday. We invite you to indulge in the full Nappywood Experience.
