Only 5 short years ago, the naturalistas in London thought they were behind America in the Natural hair scene by 6-12 months, meanwhile in Los Angeles the natural hair scene was non existent except for a few left over from the first natural scene that emerged in the 70's -80's. The eastcoast and Atlanta definetly led the way. Because the research for My Nappy ROOTS was so extensive I was happy to feel connected just be being in touch with what was happening. In 2005 when the short version of My Nappy ROOTS premiered in Los Angeles, several haircare leaders had a vibrant conversation with me ( Art Dyson, Frank Davey were the most adament accusing me of trying to change the Black hair bumarketplace. I didn't understand what they meant until years later. These were leaders in the Black hair Industry who had experiences several generations of change in the Ethnic haircare industry. Since that time a vibrant natural hair scene is alive in LA. Several conferences, expos and meet up groups have come and gone, What may have started as a trend for some is a passion for others. According to current industry leaders, Natural hair has reached a plato. Personally I see some many rich opportunities still untapped in the Natural hair market. I'm glad the chemical use if dropping for young people, and it anything maybe the chemical marketing has reached a plato, but opportunity still exist for nature products, stylists and barbers, salon & eco wellness, lifestyle. Nappywood® and The Los Angeles Natural HAir & Lifestyle Expo have merged in Los Angeles to address all of the needs for the community. Each year more seeds are planted to empower the community through healthy hair & wellness and lifestyle.
